Joining the Priesthood of Sek

The method for joining is simple, as long as you have the right alignment. Go 9E along the Street of Small Gods from the crossroads with Short Street and you will be outside the Temple of Sek. Go 2S to the high altar. 'kneel', then 'worship sek'. If you are successful, Sek will accept you. If you are not sufficiently evil, you will have to go and commit some vile acts  (see How to be Evil below).

How to be Evil

(or How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Being Nice and Just Got on With Killing Kiddies)

When you first begin your new life on the Disc, you will be neutral or nearly so. Even if you pulled the black lever in the newbie area, you'll probably not yet have what it takes to become a worshipper of Sek. Trying to do so will merely reward you with a mocking voice saying "I wouldn't want to spoil your purity". You have to make some effort to become bad enough for Sek to accept you into his church. Perhaps Hat has lower standards...

To make the grade, you have to perform evil acts. Killing little innocents works well, and the fact that they're usually too feeble to fight back is a nice bonus. See killing stuff on my main hints page.

Learning Skills

The guild room in the Temple of Sek (W from the high altar) is where you will begin to learn the skills you need to survive on the Disc. However, the priests guild specialises in certain skills, and other proficiencies are not well catered for. You will doubtless be totally unsurprised to learn that the core skills are those on the 'Faith' branch of the skills tree.

With any other skills,  the guild can only provide a very rudimentary training. In these cases, if you need the skills, you'll have to advance them elsewhere once you've maxed them with the guild trainer.

Players will quite often be more than willing to teach you skills. This will cost you XP (see main hints page) just like at the guild, but players will not (usually) charge you. They get something out of it, as they gain some experience by teaching you the skills. You should look for someone with at least double your bonus in the skill you want to advance. Note that learning from a player is more expensive than learning from your guild, so max your chosen skill at the guild before going elsewhere for instruction.

If you want me to teach you, go back to my main page and view my skills. If I don't have over double your bonus, look elsewhere (I could teach you, but it will cost more XP than someone with the higher bonus). Incidentally, you don't have to insist that someone has a massively high bonus to teach you - if they are +2x your bonus the training is as good as you will get.

Just a quick note here - it can be very hard to find someone with double your bonus in certain skills, usually because they have limited uses, and therefore people only advance them to the minimum amount required. Someday you'll understand what I mean...

You might hear Lanfear announce that she is training in Brother David's. She is a good trainer with high stats, and is a fighter, so she's a particularly good choice for advancing your weapon and other.health skills. Lanfear has an automated system in operation. Type 'tell lanfear teach me <skill>' when you are in the same room as her. I've also found Gungho to be a decent bloke who seems willing to train whenever I've needed it - he seems to spend a lot of time in KLK or the Oasis. There are plenty of others who are willing to train you - put a message on talker channel one (see main hints page) but please don't constantly spam the channel if you don't get a response.

If you're really desperate to learn skills, you can teach yourself. This costs the most XP however. At least you don't have to pay yourself for your trouble.

Removing remembered places from consecrated objects

We priests use the "remember place" ritual to set passage (portal) anchors. We use a consecrated object to remember the place by, and sometimes want to erase that anchor from the object. If you wish to do so, consecrate the object again.

Faith Weapons

There are some useful weapons around which will allow you to cast various rituals, even if you are not of a sufficient level in the requisite skill for the ritual, or even if that ritual is not normally available to priests of Sek. These items are carried by certain NPC priests; you can check to see if there are any for sale in the player shop in the Warrior's Guild (W,S,SW from outside the Drum) or see if I'm online and ask me if I have anything in stock. Failing that, you could ask around if anyone has one for sale.

However, to use these items you must have sufficient skill in faith.items.rod in order to hold the item. You may be able to wield the item with less than the recommended skill, but this will not be reliable and you could fail when you most need it. Even with the appropriate bonus, you may occasionally fail.  The table below lists all the details.

You should already be aware of what some of these rituals do (see my Rituals Page). The rituals which require more explanation are Know (discover alignment of targeted person); Sanctuary (cannot be attacked for a minute or so - nor can you attack); Bless (+1 to all stats for a few minutes) and Barrier (a short-lived shield).

To use the rituals, you first have to 'hold <item>', then 'use <item> to cast <ritual> on <person>'.

If you have sufficient fa.it.ro. you can see the aura that emanates from the item, and use it as a gauge of how well charged it is. The different descriptions, from fully charged to almost exhausted, are: a strong light radiates; glows from within; radiates a light; glows with a gentle aura; a faint aura flickers within; the faintest glow lights from within.
